Privacy & data protection

details.ie publishes profile pages for Irish .ie websites, built from information those websites publish themselves. This page explains what we hold, why we are allowed to hold it, and what you can do about it.

Who is responsible

details.ie is the data controller for the information published on this site. The fastest way to reach the controller about anything on this page is contact@details.ie. We answer data-protection requests from that address.

What we collect

For each profiled domain we may hold: the domain name and the hostnames seen under it; the company or trading name; a description; a business email address and telephone number; links to public social-media profiles; a Companies Registration Office (CRO) number; the technologies the site is built with; a county, postal address and Eircode where the site publishes one; how many pages of the site our archive holds for each crawl; and the URLs and capture dates of the specific pages we read.

This is business contact information: the details a business publishes so that customers can contact it. Apart from the visitor measurement described under Cookies and analytics below, we do not collect information about visitors' browsing beyond what is needed to serve the site, we do not run advertising, and we do not build profiles of individuals.

Some business contact details are also personal data, such as a sole trader's name in a trading name, or an email like firstname.lastname@example.ie. Where that is the case, everything below applies to it.

Lawful basis

We process this information on the basis of legitimate interests under Article 6(1)(f) of the GDPR. The legitimate interest is operating a public directory that helps people find and verify Irish businesses online.

We consider this balanced against the rights of the people concerned because: the information was published by the business itself on its own public website, for the express purpose of being contacted; it is business contact information rather than private personal data; we do not sell it, enrich it with data from other sources, or use it for marketing; and any listed party can have their entry removed on request, permanently and without giving a reason. If you disagree with that balance in your case, that itself is grounds for us to remove your entry. See removal.

Where the information comes from

• Common Crawl, a free, public, non-profit archive of the web. We read pages from its archives rather than crawling websites ourselves, so profiling a site sends no traffic to it.
• The websites' own public pages: homepages, contact pages and about pages, as captured in those archives. Every profile lists the exact URLs and capture dates it was built from.
• The Companies Registration Office register, used to check company numbers that a site publishes about itself. We link to the public CRO record rather than copying it.
• Public ranking datasets: the Chrome UX Report and the Tranco list, used only to order listings. See methodology.

How long we keep it

Profiles are rebuilt from scratch each time a new Common Crawl release is processed, so information that a site removes from its own pages disappears from ours at the next refresh. Domains that stop resolving, or that fall below our quality threshold, stop being published.

Removal requests are different: they are permanent. A removed domain goes on a suppression list that is applied on every future build, so it cannot reappear even if it is still present in a future crawl.

Who we share it with

Nobody. We do not sell, licence or transfer this data to third parties. The site is served as static files from Cloudflare Pages, which processes standard server request data as our hosting provider.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to:

• Access: ask what we hold about you.
• Rectification: have inaccurate information corrected.
• Erasure: have your entry deleted. We honour this without argument for any domain whose owner asks; see /remove/.
• Object: object to processing based on legitimate interests. In practice we treat an objection as a removal request.
• Restriction and portability, where they apply.

Complaints

If you are not satisfied with how we have handled your request, you have the right to complain to the Irish supervisory authority, the Data Protection Commission, at 21 Fitzwilliam Square South, Dublin 2, D02 RD28.

Cookies and analytics

details.ie sets no cookies of its own and runs no advertising; the only cookies here are the ones Google Analytics sets, described below. The site search downloads a single static JSON file the first time you use it; that request is served like any other file and is not tied to you.

The site does use Google Analytics 4 to measure how it is used. Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser and records the pages you view, an approximate location derived from your IP address, and your device and browser type. It is not given your name, address or any other identifying detail, and we do not use it for advertising.

That measurement data is processed by Google; see Google's privacy policy. You can opt out of Google Analytics on every site you visit with Google's browser add-on.

Accuracy

Profiles are assembled automatically from archived pages that may be weeks or months old, and details.ie has no relationship with the businesses listed. We do not verify the information and it should not be relied on as a current, authoritative record. Check with the business itself. Corrections are welcome at contact@details.ie.
